Youth impact in the public sphere

55Today, Comunicar journal has published its number 55 which is about the media sphere, controversies in public life. The Catalan team of the Euryka project has been publised in this number with an article on the difficulties that young people face in accessing the public sphere as political actors

Clua, A.; Ferran-Ferrer, N.; Terren, L. (2018). “Youth impact in the public sphere: The dissolution of the Spanish Youth Council in the press and on Twitter” [El impacto de los jóvenes en la esfera pública: La disolución del Consejo de la Juventud de España en la prensa y en Twitter ], Comunicar, 55, 49-57. e-ISSN: 1988-3293 / ISSN: 1134-3478.

This work looks at the Press coverage and the Twitter activity surrounding the restructuring process and the subsequent dissolution of the Spanish Youth Council (Consejo de la Juventud de España – CJE). A content analysis was carried out on the news published in 22 newspapers between 2012 and 2014, as well as on the use of Twitter within the framework of the “Salvemos el CJE” campaign during the same period of time. The main objective of the analysis has been to see the prominence of this issue on both the media and citizens’ agendas. In most newspapers, the measures taken by the government vis-á-vis the CJE were treated as punctual news of peripheral importance. The online campaign, mainly orchestrated by youth grassroots movements, raised the controversy on the biased nature and the political consequences of this plan. The core of the campaign addressed the representation of young people in public institutions. The results of the study suggest that the increased potential for visibility offered by social media is not always maximized and does not necessarily alter the prominence of an issue in the public sphere.

New paper on co-creation for citizen science

Students working on the data collection after the co-creation design process

Senabre, E.; Ferran-Ferrer, N.; Perelló, J. (2018). “Participatory design of citizen science experiments” [Diseño participativo de experimentos de ciencia ciudadana], Comunicar, 54, e-ISSN: 1988-3293 / ISSN: 1134-3478.

Today this article it is accessible throught pre-print on Comunicar Journal. This work has been done by Enric Senabre from Dimmons Research Group, Josep Perelló from OpenSystems in the framework of the Stem4Youth H2020 research project.

The article will be published in paper in January with a collection of articles about Shared Science and Knowledge, a monograph edited by:

* Dra. María Soledad Ramírez Montoya, Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) (México)
* Dr. Rory McGreal, Universidad de Athabasca (Canada)
* Dr. Francisco José García Peñalvo, Universidad Salamanca (España)

This article describes and analyzes the collaborative design of a citizen science research project through cocreation. Three groups of secondary school students and a team of scientists conceived three experiments on human behavior and social capital in urban and public spaces. The study goal is to address how interdisciplinary work and attention to social concerns and needs, as well as the collective construction of research questions, can be integrated into scientific research. The 95 students participating in the project answered a survey to evaluate their perception about the dynamics and tools used in the co-creation process of each experiment, and the five scientists responded to a semi-structured interview. The results from the survey and interviews demonstrate how citizen science can achieve a “co-created” modality beyond the usual “contributory” paradigm, which usually only involves the public or amateurs in data collection stages. This type of more collaborative science was made possible by the adaptation of materials and facilitation mechanisms, as well as the promotion of key aspects in research such as trust, creativity and transparency. The results also point to the possibility of adopting similar co-design strategies in other contexts of scientific collaboration and collaborative knowledge generation.

Overview of 110 OER repositories addressing educational needs and the reuse of OER

Today the following paper is accessible:

Santos-Hermosa, Gema; Ferran-Ferrer, Núria; Abadal, Ernest (2017). “Repositories of open educational resources: an assessment of reuse and educational aspects”, in The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning (IRRODL), 18(5), p.84-120. ISSN: 1492-3831

This article has been published in the journal International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning (IRRODL) under the monograph “International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning”.

Rory McGreal, Co-Editor of the journal International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning (IRRODL), from the Athabasca University, says about our work in the editorial of this monograph:

“Santos-Hermosa, Ferran-Ferrer, and Abadal provide us with an overview of OER repositories in their paper. Using a content analysis approach on 110 repositories, they address indicators of educational needs and the reuse of OER”

The paper provides an overview of the current state of repositories of open educational resources (ROER) in higher education at international level. It analyses a series of educational indicators to determine whether ROER can meet the specific needs of the education context, and to clarify understanding of the reuse of open educational resources (OER) provided by ROER. The aim of the study is to assess ROER by combining these two perspectives, and to form a basis for discussion among the universities that are responsible for these repositories.

The method was based on content analysis and consisted of two phases: an exploration of international sources, and an analysis of 110 ROER using the proposed set of indicators. The results focus on data from the analysis of ROER websites and some models of good practices. They are presented according to three core dimensions for evaluating ROER: general factors to establish types of ROER, a focus on drivers for OER reuse, and a focus on educational aspects. It was found that most of the ROER that included one or more of the proposed reuse indicators were created exclusively for educational resources. Educational aspects are not yet firmly embedded into ROER. The few repositories that seem to have successfully included them are those that provide other educational metadata and use educational standards.

The UOC is taking part in a project to analyse how inequalities affect young people’s approach to politics

On 7 and 8 February, Scuola Normale Superiore de Florència (Italy) was the venue for the initial meeting for the three-year research project Reinventing Democracy in Europe: Youth Doing Politics in Times of Increasing Inequalities (EURYKA), which will be researching young people’s participation in politics and how inequalities affect their approach to it. One of the expectations of this project, funded by the European framework programme Horizon 2020, is to design future political models and systems that are more inclusive towards young people.

The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) will be coordinating the seventh work package in this project, which will research how politics occur online among young people and the impact that inequalities have when using social networks. There is currently a team of three researchers working at the UOC, Anna Clua – UOC coordinator – and Núria Ferran, professors from the Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences; and Ismael Peña-López, from the Faculty of Law and Political Science.

The project is led by the University of Geneva with nine participating institutions: the University of Sheffield (UK), the Scuola Normale Superiore (Italy), Uppsala University (Sweden), the University of Siegen (Germany), the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques (France), the University of Crete (Greece), the University of Warsaw (Poland) and, as already mentioned, the UOC.
